Talladega, Darlington lower some ticket prices

In an effort to lure fans to races during a bad economy, two NASCAR tracks announced that they would lower some ticket prices for 2009.

Calling it the ‘best deal in 40 years’ Talladega Superspeedway announced they would reduce more than 20,000 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series tickets to $40 each.

“We recognize the difficult economic conditions our fans are facing, so to help we are thrilled to offer our fans a $40 ticket to a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race,” said Talladega Superspeedway President Rick Humphrey.  “In 40 years of racing, no other racetrack has matched Talladega Superspeedway for sheer speed or thrilling competition.”

Talladega will host the April 26 Aaron’s 499 and the Nov.1 AMP Energy 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races.

In addition Darlington Raceway said they would reduce prices by $10 for 9,000 of its seats, a price reduction that affects about 15 percent of Darlington’s capacity of 62,000 seats.

“Hopefully, this is a way we can help our fans and our guests, and make it a little easier for them to attend events here at Darlington,” track president Chris Browning told the Associated Press.

Darlington lost of its two races in 2003 but has staged a successful event on Mothers Day selling out each year since. This year however, the race lost its title sponsorship and Browning acknowledged that ticket sales have been slow.

“If you look across retail right now, there are constant sales and discounts trying to drive business,” Browning said. “We just felt like this was the right thing to do and the right time.”

Browning added that there is currently no sponsor on the horizon.
